One of Tony Levin’s distinguishing features, especially in King Crimson, is a conspicuous lack of interest in showboating or grandstanding.

Some players in the profession, when given the opportunity, might use a piece as open as Interlude as a vehicle to display how quickly they can traverse the fingerboard or to place the breadth of their technical prowess firmly in the headlights.

However, when approaching any piece, Levin’s guiding principle is always 'what can I do to serve the music?’

In this special Alex Mundy mix, taken from three New York Interludes from 8th, 9th, and 10th September 2014, Tony’s upright bass is deliberately isolated to allow the listener to concentrate their attention on the detail of what Levin brings to the piece.

The abiding musicality of his tone and note choices feels appropriate to the moment, as he imbues them with meaning, depth, and a presence that is as recognisable as it is distinctive.
