Small talk in Finland isn't as customary as it is in the United States where casual conversation is often expected in everyday interactions. And what may be perceived as "quiet" or "distant" to Americans can actually feel completely normal in Finnish culture.
*Finnish is a Uralic language, meaning it's not closely related to most European languages spoken across the continent. It developed relatively independently from most major European languages and is more closely related to Estonian and, distantly, Hungarian than to English or French. It consists of a unique structure with no grammatical gender, total phonetic consistency, and long compound words.
