Pupil shape isn’t random—it is closely connected to a cat’s size, habitat and hunting style.

Many smaller, low-to-the-ground ambush hunters have vertical or elongated pupils that help control light and judge distance.

Larger cats such as lions and tigers typically have round pupils suited to tracking movement and pursuing prey.

But nature always has exceptions! Cheetahs, cougars and even the small Pallas’s cat have round pupils, while some mid-sized wild cats fall somewhere in between.
