ITANAGAR POLICE SOLVES ₹13 LAKH DAYLIGHT ROBBERY AT GANDHI MARKET; THREE ACCUSED ARRESTED AFTER THREE-WEEK HUNT
Itanagar Police Solves ₹13 Lakh Daylight Robbery; All Three Accused Arrested After Three-Week Investigation Itanagar Police has successfully solved the armed robbery at Neelam Traders, Gandhi Market, with the arrest of all three accused after a sustained investigation of nearly three weeks. On 22 June 2026 at about 1119 hours, two persons entered the shop on the pretext of seeking assistance and viewing CCTV footage regarding allegedly lost items. Once inside, one of them produced a knife concealed in a file cover, threatened the cashier, and looted approximately ₹13 lakh in cash, while a third accomplice stood outside as a lookout. The entire incident was captured on CCTV. The case initially had very limited leads. The accused had carefully planned the crime, changed clothes, avoided CCTV-covered routes, and concealed their movements. Investigation was further hindered as Smart City CCTV cameras along suspected routes were not operational at the time. A special team was formed under the leadership of the SDPO Itanagar and Officer-in-Charge, Police Station Itanagar, comprising SI Samuel Ngupok, ASI Marli Kamgo, Ct. Punyo Tamar, Ct. Jumli Zirdo, Ct. Shankar Nampe, Ct. Tago Ligu, Ct. Mejir Pale, Ct. Sandeep Yadav, and Ct. Chukey Digle. The team analysed over 500 hours of CCTV footage from private establishments and other locations, supported by technical analysis, mobile phone tracking, source development, witness examination, and field verification. The accused were identified as Prem Rebe, Gungung Tagang, and Yubi Kamchi. Investigation revealed that Prem Rebe and Gungung Tagang entered the shop, while Yubi Kamchi acted as a lookout. After the robbery, the accused fled towards Seppa, frequently changing locations across East Kameng, Assam, and other parts of Arunachal Pradesh. Through sustained surveillance and intelligence efforts, Gungung Tagang and Yubi Kamchi were traced to Seppa and apprehended with the assistance of Police Station Seppa. The principal accused, Prem Rebe, continued to evade arrest by moving between resorts and temporary accommodations while spending the stolen money. After nearly three weeks, he was also traced and apprehended at Seppa with the assistance of East Kameng Police. Investigation revealed that a significant portion of the stolen money was used to purchase a four-wheeler, two-wheelers, mobile phones, and other items. Several such assets have been traced and recovered, and funds in one accused’s bank account have been frozen. Capital Police expresses appreciation for the cooperation extended by East Kameng Police, particularly the Officer-in-Charge, Police Station Seppa, and Ct. Shankar Taniang, as well as Ct. Sanu Raj of Police Station Naharlagun. The case was solved through sustained fieldwork, technical analysis, and strong inter-district coordination despite the absence of continuous CCTV coverage and deliberate attempts by the accused to conceal their identities and movements. make news
