When your child has a minor cold or ear infection, it can feel like getting your child vaccinated at the same time is all too much. You wonder if it might be better to wait because their immune system is already responding to some type of infection. However, the immune system is intelligent and always ready to learn.
If your child has a mild or moderate illness (think common cold or ear infection) it’s ok for them to get vaccines. So, a sick visit can also be a time to make sure your child is able to get vaccines to help their immune system learn and grow.
Getting vaccinated when you have a cold doesn’t make the immune response to the vaccines different or worse. The immune system can handle multiple exposures at once and is always primed to learn.
Delaying vaccines past when they are recommended for your child can lead to other consequences. It puts them behind schedule for future vaccines. It leaves them vulnerable to infections that can be prevented. And it increases the number of doctors' visits you must make.
