Shopping malls were once the center of American life — places built for millions, filled with crowds, noise, and routine. For decades, they felt permanent.
In this documentary, I explore four abandoned malls, each one telling a different part of the same nationwide story. In Montgomery, Alabama, a mall that once brought the entire city together began to unravel as crime increased. After a deadly shooting inside the food court, businesses fled, families stopped coming, and the building was left behind.
In Ohio, the story shifts. Tri-County Mall stood for more than sixty years, surviving generations of change before slowly losing relevance as shopping habits evolved and newer centers replaced it. When its doors finally closed in 2022, it marked the quiet end of an era.
Nearby, Westland Mall and Eastland Mall reveal what happens after abandonment truly sets in. Failed revival attempts, long-term neglect, and years without maintenance allowed water damage, collapsing interiors, and decay to take over. These spaces weren’t sealed or preserved — they were simply left to erode.
None of these malls vanished suddenly. They faded year by year, one store at a time, until they were gone.
This film is another chapter in my ongoing documentation of abandonment in America, capturing how places once designed for millions can slowly lose their purpose and be reclaimed by time.
What remains today are silent time capsules — reminders of how quickly something familiar can disappear when no one is watching.
