When Tove Alexandersson stepped up to the start line of Zegama, one of trail running’s most legendary stages, she was in a position very few athletes ever face: she was both a rookie and a favorite.
After a decade at the very top of orienteering, she had crossed over to trail running the previous year and, almost immediately, rewritten what was possible.
But Zegama is different. It’s a race steeped in history, where almost every legend of the sport has come to test themselves, and the course record of 04:16:43, set by Nienke Brinkman in 2022 was more than 9 minutes ahead of the second-best time.
As race day approached, the question wasn’t just whether Tove could win, but how far she could go.
