In Mexico, if you struggle with addiction, an anexo may be your only option. But this type of makeshift rehab center usually doesn’t have doctors, or even trained staff — it’s run by peers recovering from their own substance use disorders.
They call it a spiritual mission. Others point out that anexos are overcrowded, hold residents against their will, and are accused of subjecting them to beatings and other abuses. And behind it all, one of Mexico's most violent cartels found a way in.
