Touring the incredibly unique "Round House" in Los Altos Hills, California! Originally built in 1965 as a quirky "doughnut house," this mid-century circular icon has been completely reinvented by San Francisco-based Feldman Architecture.
When the new owners bought the home, they fell in love with its radial design but soon faced a massive challenge: low roof eaves completely blocked the breathtaking 180-degree panoramic views of Silicon Valley. Under strict local zoning laws, if they demolished the house to start fresh, they would be limited to a footprint of just 1,000 square feet.
Watch how the architects and builders saved the original foundation and completely turned the house "inside out"—replacing an awkward, open-air central courtyard with a stunning, high-performance circular kitchen capped by a massive oculus skylight that acts as a real-time sundial!
From a custom 45-foot timber compass tool used to align the walls, to its striking Shou Sugi Ban charred Accoya wood facade and minimalist luxury interiors, this is a masterclass in custom modern engineering and architectural preservation.
