In the spring time, the easiest way to catch rainbow trout is when there is a big chironomid hatch happening. My favourite way of catching them is by using a light spinning or baitcasting setup to drop the chironomid fly into the deep water and suspend it just above the bottom, and watch the rod getting pulled down! I brought my youngest son to Lac Le Jeune near Kamloops BC in mid May to try out this simple and effective method. Watch how many fish he ended up hooking in an hour.
