Description
A hot dog vendor emailed me asking if he should raise his prices before the new season starts.
I looked at his menu.
He’s underpriced.
And I told him the same thing I had to learn the hard way.
Years ago I sold hot dogs for $2.
I thought I was being the “good deal” guy.
Cheap.
Affordable.
Helping folks out.
Then a vendor friend of mine kept telling me I was doing it wrong.
He said:
“You look like a gas station hot dog.”
Took him about a year to talk me into raising my prices.
When I finally did it, I raised them to $3 and prepared myself to explain it to every customer.
Guess what happened?
Nobody asked.
Nobody complained.
I actually sold MORE hot dogs.
Because suddenly it looked like a premium hot dog instead of a cheap one.
Today we have vendors in VendorsUnited selling $8, $10, even $14 hot dogs depending on location.
And they’re crushing it.
The lesson:
Don’t gouge people.
But don’t sell yourself like a gas station roller dog either.
Price it like a premium product and people treat it like one.
