Today we’re taking on an old electrical panel upgrade in an 1800s Connecticut home, and this one has some history behind it.
This house still had one of the early breaker panels from the era after glass fuses, along with old metering equipment, a fused disconnect, electric heat wiring, and a setup that clearly had a few different lives over the years. Before any new panel could go in, I had to map out the existing service, figure out what was feeding what, test everything properly, and make sure the home was safe to work on.
Big thanks to Fluke for sponsoring this video. I’ve used Fluke meters for years in the field, and for this job I brought out the Fluke 378 FC along with some other testing gear to help diagnose, verify, and document what was happening before the upgrade.
In this video:
Why I usually don’t film my regular job
The tools I actually brought for a side-work panel upgrade
Testing and mapping an old electrical service
Dealing with old panels, rusted screws, and weird legacy wiring
Installing a cleaner, safer, more modern electrical panel
Why basements are basically part of the electrician lifestyle
Electrical work is dangerous. This video is for entertainment and general education only. Hire a licensed electrician for service work, panel replacements, or anything involving live electrical systems.
