I spent the last few weeks living in and field testing a prototype of the all-new Winnebago ARKA, and in this video I break down exactly what that experience was like. From true off-road capability to cold-weather camping and off-grid living, here are my honest thoughts after taking the ARKA far beyond where most RVs would ever go.
Built on a Ram 5500 turbo diesel chassis with a true 4x4 system, low-range transfer case, and massive 42-inch tires, the ARKA is designed for people who want to explore remote places with confidence. No lifts, no major modifications, no trying to “make” it off-road capable. This thing is built for it from the factory.
During my time testing the ARKA, I took it into dry camping locations I could never reach in my personal RV. With onboard air, 800 watts of solar, over 7,000 watts of battery capacity, a 3,600-watt inverter, and a 60-gallon freshwater tank, it was designed to stay out longer and go farther.
A few highlights from my experience:
• True 4x4 system with low-range gearing
• 42-inch off-road tires
• Onboard air system
• Heated floors that actually impressed me
• Comfortable sleeping space for four adults
• Huge off-grid capability
• Excellent cold-weather performance
• Tons of storage for bikes, gear, and recovery equipment
One of the biggest surprises for me was how comfortable the ARKA felt while still being extremely capable off-road. It handled rough terrain confidently, but still felt like a comfortable basecamp at the end of the day.
This was a prototype test vehicle, and I appreciate Winnebago allowing me the opportunity to spend real time living in it and putting it through its paces.
