🇨🇳 I Entered China’s Slums… 😱 This Is What I Walked Into, 广州, 中国

🇨🇳 I entered the hidden slums of China (中国) to see what life is really like beyond the skyscrapers of modern cities. I walked deep into one of Guangzhou’s (广州) so-called “urban villages” — areas that many people outside China would describe as slums, though in China they are officially referred to as urban villages (城中村). These are dense, older neighbourhoods that have been absorbed into the rapid expansion of the modern city, yet never fully redeveloped or rebuilt.

The moment you step inside these areas in Guangzhou (广州), everything changes. The wide roads, glass towers, and polished skyline quickly disappear, replaced by narrow alleyways squeezed between tightly packed buildings. Light becomes limited. In many corridors, it feels dark even during the day, with structures so close together that only thin strips of sky are visible above.

As I walked deeper through the alleys, the reality became more intense. Laundry hangs between windows overhead, tangled wires stretch across the narrow streets, and small doorways open directly onto the walkways. Space is extremely limited, and everything feels compressed — life stacked vertically and horizontally within a tight maze of concrete.

This is a side of Guangzhou (广州) that is rarely shown in polished travel videos or official city imagery. It exists just minutes away from some of the most modern districts in China, yet feels like a completely separate world. The contrast is striking — futuristic skyscrapers in the distance, and then these shadowed, narrow passages where everyday life continues in a very different form.

Despite the harsh and crowded conditions, these urban villages (城中村) are still home to thousands of people. Small family-run shops, street food stalls, repair workshops, and residential rooms are all layered together within the same dense network of alleys. It is chaotic, tightly packed, and constantly active — but also deeply functional for the people who live there.

Walking through it, you are constantly aware that this is real, lived-in space. It is not staged or designed for visitors. The sounds, the lighting, the movement of people — everything shifts as you move deeper inside. Some parts feel alive and noisy, others quiet and almost still, but the sense of density never disappears.

This video is part of my walking exploration of Guangzhou (广州), showing a side of China (中国) that is often overlooked or simplified. These urban villages (城中村) exist alongside extreme modern development, representing a layered reality where old and new China continue to exist side by side within the same city.
