Description
In this story, there is a bird that finds a single grain of gram. She takes the grain to a wooden peg to eat it, but the grain gets stuck in a crack in the peg. The bird asks a carpenter for help to retrieve the grain, but he refuses. She then goes to the king and asks him to punish the carpenter, but the king also refuses to help. Next, she approaches the queen and asks her to leave the king, but the queen says she will not leave the king for the sake of a single grain of gram; she, too, refuses to help. The bird then goes to a snake for help, but the snake also refuses. She then asks a stick for help, but the stick refuses as well. She leaves and goes to a fire, asking it to burn the stick, but the fire refuses. She then goes to water and asks it to extinguish the fire, but the water refuses. Flying on, she goes to an elephant and asks it to drink up the water, but the elephant refuses to help despite hearing her plea. She then flies to a net and asks it to capture the elephant, but the net refuses to do so. She leaves and goes to a mouse, asking it to gnaw through the net, but the mouse refuses. Finally, she goes to a cat and asks it to eat the mouse; the cat agrees to help, and with the cat's assistance, the bird finally gets her grain of gram back.
