In this quick 6-minute watercolor demonstration, I share how to loosen up a tight or overworked painting and bring it back to life.
This painting was originally done on 140lb hot press paper. Today, I reworked it using a simple but powerful technique — applying torn paper to soften, lift, and create movement in the surface.
This approach is especially helpful if:
• Your watercolor feels stiff or overworked
• You want to salvage a painting instead of starting over
• You’re working on 140lb hot press paper
• You paint plein air and need fast recovery techniques
• You want more looseness and flow in your work
Learning how to step back and rework a painting is just as important as learning how to start one. Sometimes the most expressive passages happen after we “let go.”
This technique can easily be applied to:
