For America’s 250th birthday, The New York Times turned census data from nearly 340 million people into a sweeping visual map of who we are and how we got here. Data reporters Albert Sun and Jeff Adelson explain how they built “An American Mosaic” from census-tract ancestry data, why categories like “American,” African American, German, Scandinavian, Vietnamese, Chaldean and many more appear the way they do on the map, and how waves of migration, frontier settlement, quotas and exclusion laws shaped today’s patterns. They also dig into what happens when immigration slows or turns negative, how Trump-era deportation and legal-immigration crackdowns could reshape the map in coming decades, and why questions about “who gets to be American” and “how we identify ourselves” will define the next chapter of the national story.
