Description

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is using the Databricks Platform and AI to accelerate peatland mapping and restoration across England. Working with Natural England and Databricks, the project is helping restore one of the world's most important ecosystems for biodiversity, drinking water and carbon storage.

Traditionally, mapping peatlands required manually digitizing large areas, a process that could take a week for a single region. With AI running on the Databricks Platform, the same work can now be completed in less than a day, saving weeks or even months of effort each year.

The project is also automating the identification of critical peatland features, including peat dams that help retain water and restore degraded landscapes. By combining AI with scalable compute, DEFRA and Natural England are creating national-scale environmental maps that were previously impossible to produce manually.

The result is faster conservation, better environmental insights and greater awareness of the vital role peatlands play in protecting biodiversity, safeguarding drinking water and storing carbon.
