Granblue Fantasy Versus playthrough (PS4, 1CC)

Playthrough of arcade mode with Beelzebub, facing opponents on the Extreme or Nightmare difficulty levels. I played Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising on the PC a few months ago, so how’s the original hold up? Initially, I really liked GBFVR, but then I got to S rank online and that’s where I began not to like it quite as much. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not too keen on fighting games where the combos go on and on, outside of super moves I think combos should be 5 hits tops and then you’re done. But that’s just me. The original Granblue doesn’t have the Raging Strikes, Bravery points and some other stuff, the upshot of this is the combos aren’t as long. I’m fine with that!

However, there’s now a few problems with the original GBFV. Take a look at the character select screen at 3:00. Note how twelve of the characters -half the game’s roster -is locked behind paid DLC. Every single one of the DLC characters in this is available for free in Rising (don’t worry, Rising has a new batch of DLC characters to pay for). Rising also has vastly better netcode, crossplay between the PC, PS4 and PS5 versions, Grand Bruise mode (it’s fun, ignore the haters), additional story content and more. So whilst this is good, I can’t recommend it, you’d be better off getting Rising.

Also, it was announced some features of this game were being shut down this month, which is another reason to skip it and get Rising instead. The PC version currently has a warning about this going to happen, strangely the PS4 version does not. If you really like your physical games you should get this, since it did get a physical release, whilst Rising didn’t.

Anyway, the playthrough. You have to unlock Beelzebub by playing through the RPG mode. This mode is worth going through due to some of the silly enemies you can fight (like robot Katalinas) and the gigantic bosses. I haven’t played the Rising story mode yet, my understanding is that it was simplified compared to the original.

This game’s difficulty isn’t that bad, even when picking extreme or nightmare level opponents. They will counter a lot, but they don’t just sit there blocking everything you throw at them and will get hit. The only opponent to really be weary of is Beelzebub himself. He’s the final boss and is kind of a Shin Beelzebub alternate, who has some different moves compared to the regular version. He wouldn’t be too bad if it wasn’t for his meter regen and high damage output. But even on nightmare, he’s still way easier than your average SNK boss.
