Description

'So Blue' is created by Seán Doran using data from GOES19 weather satellite & a remix of 'Penumbra' by Stellardrone

Statement of Transformative Work & Original Production:
"While based on data from GOES19 weather satellite the final media is the result of an extensive manual production process which repairs gaps & artifacts in the original monochrome data, processes the data to create full color 10bit video and uses upscaling & frame interpolation methods to create a new and original media product. This synthesis of scientific data, creative production processes and cinematic rendering is designed to provide a unique 'Living Artwork' perspective of our planet. Every frame has been significantly modified from its original state to create a new, distinct piece of media for which all rights are reserved."

'A meditative slow gaze at Earth's atmosphere, revealing the hidden depths of activity in the water-filled skies of planet Earth.'

This is real imagery captured from the GOES19 weather satellite repaired, remastered and transformed into 4K video footage. It is independently produced. The Ultra High Definition video footage is not created by NASA, NOAA, or sourced from any of their servers.

1,290 frames of GOES19 satellite data from IR bands 8, 9 & 10 spanning 3 days from 20th May 2026 are repaired, remastered, resized & retimed to create the 4k video footage in this film. Highest fidelity raw data is used to preserve quality during production. A method called frame interpolation is used to calculate the extra video frames required to create smooth motion.

To create a smooth, cinematic experience free from distraction all gaps in the data need to be repaired. Missing frames from each daily image sequence for each IR band are created. Missing sections from each daily image sequence for each IR band are patched using surrounding data. Visual artifacts that detract from the desired outcome are repaired. The full sequence for each IR band is assigned to a color channel and processed to arrive at the final look. Intermediate sequences are produced to consolidate repaired & processed sequences and to assist with frame interpolation method used to create Ultra High Definition video footage.

Cosma remasters satellite imagery and astronaut photography to create beautiful portraits of planet Earth in stunning detail. Each film is accompanied by immersive soundscapes and music to stir the soul.

GOES19 is a geostationary satellite operated by NASA and NOAA. It is used to provide continuous, high-resolution observations of the Earth's weather and climate.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA ) is a U.S. federal scientific and regulatory agency within the Department of Commerce that focuses on the conditions of the oceans, atmosphere, and coasts.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration ( NASA ) is a U.S. government agency responsible for civilian space programs, aeronautics research, and planetary science. NASA's mission is to drive advances in science, technology, aeronautics, and space exploration to enhance knowledge, education, innovation, economic vitality, and stewardship of Earth.
