Description
Deep beneath the heart of Europe, Germany has just unearthed a staggering 43 million metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE), a monumental discovery that could permanently break the continent's heavy reliance on foreign supply chains. Located in the Altmark region of Saxony-Anhalt, this massive subterranean treasure was confirmed by Neptune Energy and sits thousands of meters underground, directly beneath a natural gas field that has been operating since 1969. With Europe currently importing 100% of its processed lithium, largely from China, this single German deposit could produce up to 25,000 metric tons of battery-grade material annually—enough to power roughly 500,000 electric vehicles every single year.
