Sea by George Winston.
This is actually the first time I’ve recorded music by George Winston - and, to be honest, until recently I barely knew his work at all. The composer himself was suggested to me by my subscriber @RosCharron in the comments under one of my previous uploads, and while exploring Winston’s music, I came across Sea and immediately wanted to try playing it myself.
🎼 About the music
Like much of Winston’s music, Sea is built around atmosphere, repetition, and emotional directness rather than pure virtuosity. The piece unfolds naturally, almost like an improvisation - balancing movement and stillness in a very understated way.
There’s something deeply personal and unforced in this style of writing: simple harmonies, flowing rhythm, and a sense of openness that leaves space for the listener.
🎧 About the composer
George Winston (1949–2023) was an American pianist and composer associated with melodic piano music, folk influences, and what later became known as “new age” piano - although his music often transcended that label.
He became widely known through albums such as Autumn, Winter into Spring, and December, recordings that introduced a more intimate and atmospheric piano sound to a broad audience.
Winston described much of his approach as “rural folk piano” - inspired as much by nature, landscape, and American folk traditions as by classical music itself.
His influence on modern solo piano music has been enormous, even if it’s sometimes understated.
