Frédéric Chopin - Prelude Op. 28 No. 4 in E minor | Piano
Another spontaneous recording.
After listening to many different interpretations, I found myself going down a bit of a rabbit hole - and eventually decided to record my own version. Not quite sight-reading: this piece has been with me for years, to the point where it almost plays itself from memory.
This recording comes from a short session of three takes — the one you hear is the third.
🎼 About the music
The Prelude Op. 28 No. 4 in E minor by Frédéric Chopin is one of his 24 preludes, written between 1835 and 1839.
It is one of Chopin’s most intimate and restrained works - built around a descending melodic line and a sequence of slowly shifting harmonies. The music unfolds with a sense of inevitability, briefly interrupting its descent before dissolving into a quiet, final resolution.
At Chopin’s request, this prelude was performed at his funeral, alongside Mozart’s Requiem.
Hans von Bülow famously described it as “suffocation”, reflecting its deeply introspective and melancholic character. Chopin’s final marking, smorzando (“dying away”), reinforces this sense of fading into silence.

This prelude has appeared in numerous films and television works, including The Pianist, The Notebook, and Five Easy Pieces, and continues to be one of Chopin’s most recognizable and emotionally direct compositions.
