“For the past 10 or so years I’ve been digging deep into certain sounds always looking for new things. One island that kept popping up was Guadeloupe. First through Zouk but digging deeper into the history & music showed me rhythms & melodies that resonated deeply with my spirit (or even made me find my spirit?!). So much so I decided to visit the island last year. On this journey I met so many lovely people and we connected deeply through the music & rhythms. They showed me records I never heard of or that were on my want list for many years, explaining what they were about and even teaching me a bit of French Creole, helping me understand the context of the music better.
This recording is a brief glimpse into the beauty & musical diversity of this tiny island group in the “Lesser” Antilles. Gwo Ka, Biguine & Cadence existed long before recorded music was invented.
They’re part of a lineage of drum musics originating on or close to the shores of Africa, transported with slave ships to the islands of the Carribean & the shores of the Americas. Some are deeply spiritual, melancholic or sad. Others a testament to the persistence or celebration of the enslaved or oppressed peoples.
These are but some of the forgotten grooves of Guadeloupe. Enjoy!”
