FIFA RED CARD
Earlier this week a tackle got USAs Folarin Balogun sent off with a red card. It was a decision US President Trump didn't agree with and made a phone call to the president of FIFA. Gianni Infantino. Shortly after FIFA reversed the decision, lifting the mandatory one-game ban allowing Balagon to play in the next game against Belgium. Many, including President Trump, celebrated the decision. Meanwhile others called it out as cheating, including former FIFA president Joseph Blatter who tweeted that "Red cards are not overturned by political phone calls". The European governing body weren't happy either and neither were the Belgium football federation. Ultimately the decision didn't help the US team much, with Belgium eliminating them in a 4-1 win. But the situation raised a lot of questions about sports integrity and now a group of politicians from Europe are launching an investigation into the whole thing. So I guess we'll have to wait and see how this plays out.
TELSTRA OUTAGE
Australia's largest mobile network, Telstra, was hit by a nationwide outage this morning. It affected payment systems, traffic lights, public transport and may have left millions of customers unable to make calls or access the internet. Telstra has apologised and says they're looking into what happened.
SPACE JUNK
Several metal balls have fallen from the sky and washed up on Forrest beach in North Queensland. Space junk is human made debris usually as a result of space missions, that orbits the earth, and most of it ends up falling back to earth. Luckily, no one has ever been seriously hurt by falling space junk, but what's inside can be highly toxic. The Australian Space Agency says these appear to be what's known as Pressure Vessels. That's a metal fuel container used by space launch vehicles like rockets. Unlike most space junk, which burns up in our atmosphere before it has a chance to land, these tanks can withstand extreme heat and make it back intact, which is what's happened here. Its not the first time we've seen space junk, most recently in 2023, some washed up on a beach in Western Australia. In 2022, debris from a Space X Mission was seen in the middle of a paddock in New South Wales and in 1979, a NASA space station plummeted out of orbit, showering parts of WA with debris. For now, we don't yet know exactly which mission this space junk is from, but authorities have said there's a chance we'll see more wash up in the future.
ARTHUR BEETSON
Arthur Beetson was born in South West Queensland in 1945. As a young boy, Arthur loved rugby, in fact he started playing when he was just six years old. In his late teens, Arthur was playing for Roma when he was asked to join the Redcliffe Dolphins. In 1965, the team won the Brisbane premiership and Arthur was named club player of the year. He was signed on to Balmain and was so good that he was chosen to play for Australia's national team. Arthur was skilled, he was fast and he was big, in fact that was his nickname 'Big Artie'. In 1973, he became the first Indigenous person to captain a national team. Arthur retired from playing in 1981, but that wasn't the end of his rugby days. He took up coaching and helped Queensland snag four State of Origin series wins. In 1978, he was given a Medal of the Order of Australia and in 2003, he was inducted into the Rugby League Hall of Fame. Arthur died in 2011 but his legacy lives on as one of the best Rugby Players Australia has ever seen.
