FBA Claims Black Americans Don’t Look African—Is That True?
Why do some people within the FBA movement claim that Black Americans have facial features that are noticeably different from those of continental Africans? Is this belief supported by genetics, ancestry and history—or is it influenced more by identity politics, regional diversity and social conditioning?
In this conversation, we examine the enormous physical diversity found throughout Africa and the Black diaspora. Africa is home to thousands of ethnic groups, and there is no single set of features that defines what an African person is supposed to look like. Black Americans also have complex ancestral histories shaped by multiple regions of West and Central Africa, generations in the United States and, in some cases, varying degrees of additional ancestry.
This discussion is not about denying the distinct culture and historical experience of Black Americans. It is about questioning whether appearance should be used to create rigid divisions between Black Americans, Africans, Caribbeans and other members of the global African diaspora.
Can someone truly determine a person’s nationality, ethnicity or ancestral background simply by looking at their face? Let’s have an honest and respectful conversation.
