Graphic design is visual communication, but today it branches into many distinct areas of practice.
There was a time when graphic design was easier to define. Print was dominant, and visual communication mostly lived through posters, books, newspapers, packaging, and other physical media.
Today, the landscape is much broader. Graphic design now exists across print, digital platforms, motion, interactive interfaces, environmental spaces, data systems, and more.
As media has evolved, graphic design has become increasingly specialised.
To say you want to become a graphic designer is a starting point, but it does not yet define your direction. Contemporary graphic design includes many different disciplines, from branding and packaging to editorial design, UI/UX, motion graphics, typography, environmental graphics, and information design.
Each area requires its own mindset, tools, creative focus, and way of thinking.
In this video, we explore the key areas of graphic design so you can better understand the paths available within the industry, and begin to discover which direction resonates with you most.
