In May and June 1940, hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers from the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, and other Allied nations were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk as German forces closed in. During the historic evacuation known as Operation Dynamo, more than 338,000 troops were rescued and transported across the English Channel to safety in Britain by a combination of naval vessels and hundreds of civilian boats.
What could have been a devastating defeat became a story of courage, sacrifice, determination, and survival that helped shape the course of the war.
