Skye, our Norwegian elkhound pulled us towards this small grove of pine trees the moment she detected the telltale sounds of a Douglas squirrel during our walk at Dungeness Recreation Area. Instead of charging into the thicket to get as close as possible to the squirrel that was chirping while dashing across the branches in the tree, Skye sat down and silently watched in fascination as the squirrel sat on a limb and ate a pinecone. Both Diane and I recorded video of this squirrel as it rapidly devoured the pinecone, spinning it and ripping off slices with its teeth down to its core similar in fashion to a human eating corn on the cob.
Background:
Clallam County’s Dungeness Recreation Area, located only about 1.2 miles from our house, is one of our favorite parks to take Skye for walks on the many trails through meadows and woods and along the bluff overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca. In addition to the many other outdoor hikers and dog walkers, we encounter wildlife including deer, eagles, hawks, many species of birds and lots of Douglas squirrels.
