Origin: Coined by CIA insiders (notably Victor Marchetti) to describe a favorite tactic of clandestine professionals when a cover story fails.
Purpose: To mitigate scandals, manage public perception, and shield higher-level operatives or deeper secrets from exposure.
Method: By admitting part of the truth, the entity gains credibility, which acts as a "pressure valve" to satisfy curiosity and halt deeper scrutiny.
Famous Example: The term was popularized during the Watergate scandal, where it was used in conversations between President Richard Nixon and his aides regarding how to release limited,
curated information to protect the presidency.
Modern Context: Frequently used in political and corporate damage control, often described as a "modified limited hangout" when a story needs to be tweaked rather than just partially revealed
