Since 2017 Tony Higgins and Mike Peden have been working with BBE Music in promoting and spreading the genius of Japanese jazz from its 'golden era' of the 60s-80s. Through the highly-acclaimed Jazz series of compilations and the J Jazz Masterclass Series of full album reissues, Tony and Mike have given a global audience access to some of the rarest, obscure and most in-demand modern Japanese jazz. Often working with many legendary artists, including Terumasa Hino, Takeo Moriyama, Hideo Ichikawa and Masahiko Satoh, the pair have opened up a world that was previously limited to a handful of hardcore collectors. Drawing on their respective vinyl collections amassed over many years, they embrace modal, spiritual, jazz funk, samba, fusion, free and hard / post bop jazz. As well as the compilation series and reissues, Tony and Mike co-authored a 400-page book, J Jazz: Free and Modern Jazz Albums From Japan 1954-19988, published by BBE Music. The first of its kind, it's a full-colour, large format book that features 500 albums, telling the story of this incredible culture.
To mark the 5 June release of J Jazz: Deep Modern Jazz From Japan Vol. 5 on BBE Music, curators Tony Higgins and Mike Peden select choice cuts from the compilation and play an exclusive preview mix for MAJ using their original Japanese vinyl albums from their own collections, including ultra rare private pressings.
