Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney discusses college football’s widespread tampering problem and takes responsibility for the Tigers’ disappointing seven-win season during ACC Kickoff in Charlotte.
Swinney says college football may need congressional assistance to establish order and meaningful consequences for tampering. He points to financial penalties, suspensions and firings as possible deterrents, saying the problem has become rampant because programs have little fear of punishment.
The Clemson coach also reflects on a 2025 season that he says “stunk,” despite the Tigers losing three games by a combined 11 points and two on the final play. Swinney says Clemson failed to run the ball effectively, execute on third down, finish in the fourth quarter and consistently play sound defense.
Swinney accepts responsibility for those failures while noting Clemson’s broader record of success, including three ACC championships in the past six seasons, two College Football Playoff appearances and one of the nation’s highest win totals.
He also praises Clemson’s players for staying together after a 3-5 start, winning four consecutive games and securing the program’s 15th straight winning season.
