The U.S. Supreme Court’s latest ruling on birthright citizenship sparked a sharp dissent from Justice Clarence Thomas, who argued the decision “devalues” American citizenship by extending constitutional protections far beyond the original intent of the 14th Amendment. Thomas maintained that automatic citizenship was never meant to apply to children born to parents who are in the United States unlawfully or only temporarily, warning that the Court’s interpretation weakens the meaning and value of U.S. citizenship. Justice Samuel Alito echoed similar concerns, arguing the ruling could further expand birthright citizenship beyond its historical limits. Meanwhile, the Court’s majority reaffirmed that the 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to nearly everyone born on U.S. soil, rejecting President Donald Trump’s executive order seeking to limit birthright citizenship. The landmark decision is expected to fuel renewed political and legal battles over immigration, constitutional interpretation, and whether Congress or a future constitutional amendment could ultimately redefine birthright citizenship in America.
