Musical biopics are a mixed bag. You get classics like Love & Mercy and Better Man (Brian Wilson and Robbie Williams) where you have an artist who wants to tell a story about themselves and is willing to be honest about their life. Then you get movies like Bohemian Rhapsody and Michael (Freddie Mercury/Queen and Michael Jackson) that are more concerned with protecting the artist's legacy. Those last two are brilliantly mocked by Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.
So, why are chud's eager to defend Michael despite it's clear shortfalls? I'm frequently told they just want better art, but surely they'd want something better than a biopic designed to protect an artist as a product and something that allows the audience to learn something about the person.
Let's look at the reactions of Film Threat (Chris Gore), RK Outpost (Ryan Kinel), & Nerdrotic (Gary Buechler) and see if we can find the answer.
