Chicago Public Schools is proposing sweeping budget cuts, including the layoffs of approximately 760 teachers and 801 teacher aides, as it works to close a $732 million budget deficit under Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson's administration ahead of the new school year. The proposal also includes five furlough days for employees on non-instructional days, a districtwide spending freeze, and a request for additional Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funding to help balance the budget. The Chicago Teachers Union has strongly criticized the plan, while Mayor Brandon Johnson has also publicly opposed balancing the budget through workforce reductions, arguing that balancing the books "off the backs of working people and our students is not sustainable." Public hearings are scheduled before the Chicago Board of Education votes on the budget, with the controversial proposal already fueling heated debate over the future of Chicago Public Schools, education funding, and the district's hiring priorities.
