In this video, we’ll look at the combustion of ethane (C₂H₆) and answer a question that comes up all the time:
How can you have something like 7/2 O₂ in a balanced chemical equation?

It feels strange at first — how can you have half a molecule?
But the key idea is that those numbers aren’t really counting individual molecules - they’re showing ratios.

Just like in math, 6/12, 3/6, and 1/2 all mean the same thing.
Writing 7/2 O₂ just expresses the same chemical relationship in a slightly different way.

And if we multiply everything by 2, we get rid of the fraction, but the ratio — and the chemistry — stay the same.
