What have uni students ever given the world? The rules of modern football for one.
In 1848 a group of students from Cambridge University wrote down a set of 11 rules for football and nailed these ‘Cambridge Rules’ to the trees surrounding Parker’s Piece. This was the first time that football, as we know it today, had any formalised laws. It also makes @cuafc7631 the oldest football club in the world.
Rowan is a Law student at @JesusCollegeCambridge and a big @LeedsUnited fan. He takes a look at how the rules of the game evolved in Cambridge before the founding of the Football Association (FA) in 1863, including the creation of half-time, the addition of which prompted discussions similar to those at this World Cup around hydration breaks.
