As chronicled in the award winning documentary "Crip Camp," directed by former camper Jim Lebrecht and Nicole Newnham, Camp Jened was a revelation for the teenagers who joined. It allowed them, sometimes for the first time, to be themselves around other people, without fear of stigmatization, without being anxious that their needs would be met or that the spaces would be designed in a way that might exclude them from participating. Camp Jened was designed and run so as to let its campers be normal kids, to move freely and socialize and make out and cause trouble like every other teen at every other summer camp.
