Martyr Hyacinthus of Amastris is commemorated on July 18 in the Orthodox Christian tradition. Born into a devout Christian family in Amastris (modern-day Amasra, Turkey), the holy martyr was marked by God's grace from childhood. According to his Life, an angel revealed the name he was to bear.
At only three years old, Hyacinthus prayed with childlike faith that God would restore life to a dead infant. The Lord answered his prayer, and the child was raised from the dead. The two boys later grew up together, dedicating themselves to a life of prayer, holiness, and ascetic struggle.
Filled with zeal for the true God, St. Hyacinthus confronted pagan idolatry by cutting down a tree that was being worshipped. For this bold confession of Christ, he endured terrible tortures. His persecutors knocked out his teeth, dragged him over the ground with ropes, and imprisoned him. There, after faithfully enduring suffering for Christ, he surrendered his soul to the Lord and received the crown of martyrdom.
His life reminds us that genuine faith knows no age and that courage in defending Christ is rewarded with eternal glory.
