Description
Donn Hewes has two differently designed logging carts at home and wanted to test which one might work best pulling logs out of the woods.
He planned to do the testing at the 2026 Draft Animal Power Network Field Days in October, but needed a big log for the demonstration. There were no big logs at the event grounds, so Donn needed to bring a substitute, a narrow scoot that can carry a couple of tons of weight.
In this first episode, Donn harnesses his young gelding Duke and talks about why he chose Duke for the job of pulling logs out of the woods and how this kind of work continues his training.
In the next episode, Donn and Duke will pull out of the woods the logs for sled runners, then Donn builds the sled using chainsaw carpentry.
After that, episodes 3 and 4 will show how the two different logging carts performed at the DAPNet field day. We'll release an episode a day.
