Blessed Humbert of Romans (14 July): Butler's Lives of the Saints

Blessed Humbert of Romans (c. 1194–1277), fifth Master General of the Dominican Order, stands as one of the great reformers, preachers, and spiritual leaders of the medieval Church. In this reading from Fr. Alban Butler's Lives of the Saints for July 14, we hear his powerful exhortation to authentic Christian charity:

"How will the people recognize us as messengers of Christ if not for charity?"

Blessed Humbert reminds us that the Church is united by supernatural charity, and that those who preach the Gospel must first live the love of Christ among themselves. After faithfully leading the Dominican Order, he resigned his office, devoted himself to prayer, study, and preaching, and later assisted Pope Clement IV before peacefully returning to religious life until his holy death in 1277.

His example continues to inspire Catholics to pursue humility, fraternity, and zeal for the salvation of souls.
