The Battle of the Gullet is the bl*odiest naval conflict in the history of Westeros. Fought in 130 AC during the Dance of the Dragons, it was a surprise pincer attack by the Triarchy fleet on House Velaryon's blockade—an action that critically starved King's Landing of food and supplies.The Setup and Surprise AttackTo break the Velaryon blockade, the Green faction (allied with King Aegon II) enlisted the Triarchy (the navies of Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh), who sent 90 warships into the Narrow Sea.The Pincer: The Triarchy admiral divided his fleet into two squadrons. The northern force attacked the Velaryon galleys under the glare of the rising sun, catching them off guard. The southern force sailed past Dragonstone and heavily raided Driftmark, sacking Spicetown and burning the harbor.The Princes: During the chaos, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon's attempt to send his younger brothers to Pentos for safety went awry. The princes' escort fleet was intercepted, resulting in the capture of Prince Viserys (who was sold to Lys) while Prince Aegon barely escaped on his dragon Stormcloud.The Dragon CounterattackUpon learning of the attack, Jacaerys and the Blacks scrambled their dragons, including newly claimed "dragonseeds" such as Addam Velaryon, Hugh Hammer, Ulf White, and Nettles.The Losses: Although the dragons turned the tide and decimated the Triarchy fleet, it was a pyrrhic victory. Jacaerys and his dragon Vermax were both lost in the chaos, crashing into the sea after being entangled in ship rigging and peppered by crossbow bolts.The Outcome: Only 28 of the 90 Triarchy ships survived to retreat. The Velaryons also suffered devastating losses, losing more than a third of their fleet and their treasures on Driftmark
