Gott, wie groß ist deine Güte – recorded here for All of Bach with tenor Daniel Johannsen and organist Matthias Havinga on the famous Bader organ – is a song from the Gesangbuch by Schemelli. For this songbook for private devotion he involved the probably most famous music consultant of all time, who happened to be his son’s music teacher: Bach. The melody of BWV 462 could be by Schemelli, but also by Bach: the flowing eighth-note motion in both the vocal line and the bass is beautifully balanced, with splendid modulations.
