Bach wrote the jubilant Christ lag in Todesbanden, BWV 625 – recorded here for All of Bach with Bart Naessens – for Easter, to celebrate that Jesus died in order to grant eternal life to the faithful. This idea lies at the heart of Christian belief and Church Father Luther put it to words in the chorale text ‘Christ lag in Todesbanden’. The text focuses on the universal battle with death and the victory over it. Bach set Luther’s text to music (BWV 4 and BWV 158), and the chorale melody appears occasionally in his organ works as well. As in this compact BWV 625 where all the attention is turned to the victory.
