Description
Methane is one of the most powerful greenhouse gases driving climate change—but it is also one of the fastest opportunities for action.
As the host country of World Environment Day 2026, Azerbaijan is highlighting the importance of tackling methane emissions as part of the global effort to slow climate change and accelerate the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
Reducing methane emissions acts like a climate emergency brake, helping to slow global warming while the world scales up clean energy solutions. Today, advanced technologies—from satellite imagery and specialized sensors to drones and ground-based measurements—are making it easier than ever to detect and address emissions.
The Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) uses satellite data to identify major methane emission sources and alert governments and operators so action can be taken quickly. By finding emissions and stopping them at the source, countries and companies can make significant progress toward climate goals while improving efficiency and reducing waste.
Azerbaijan is among the countries advancing efforts to reduce methane emissions, with ambitious decarbonization targets and a commitment to achieving near-zero methane emissions by 2035.
The technology exists. The solutions are available. The time to act is now..
