AI FRAMEWORK
We all know about how AI impacts us right now, but what about in the future? Well, today the Prime Minister announced a new national framework for how the government plans to control it. It's no secret that many are concerned about the future of AI, from things like copyright infringements, to job market disruptions and environmental impacts from big data centres, which have been a big deal recently as AI giants including Open AI, Anthropic, Amazon, and Microsoft announced plans to build around 90 new data centres down under. Okay, so, how? Well, that'll be with the new Office of Artificial Intelligence. It'll be a group, directly under the Prime Minister, whose job it'll be to set nation-wide standards that AI companies have to obey. Some of the main points include rules about where data centres can be built and the power and water they use, and copyright rules to stop companies freely using Australian creative work. It's a tricky balance, because the government reckons there are also some big benefits for Aussies too, including billions of dollars being invested into our economy, stronger national security and independence, and brand new job opportunities.
TRUMP FEE REVERSAL
US President Donald Trump has abandoned his plans to charge a fee for cargo ships travelling through the Strait of Hormuz. It comes as tensions between the US and Iran have flared up, with the President saying just two days ago he wanted to introduce a 20% fee on all cargo shipped through the strait, as a payment for the US' protection in the area. But now, he seems to have changed his mind. And he says instead of the toll, the US will now strike big investment and trade deals with Middle Eastern countries.
SOCIAL MEDIA CURFEW
Well, the UK is planning to introduce a curfew for teenagers, barring them from using social media overnight. Yep, along with the UK's under 16 social media ban, which was announced last month, the government here plans to take things a step further, announcing a social media curfew for older teenagers. That means if you're 16 or 17 years old, apps like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube will automatically be unavailable between midnight and 6am. Along with restrictions on certain addictive features, like auto-play and infinite scrolling. However, teenagers will still have the option to turn off the settings in their account if they'd like.
EXPENSIVE SKELETON
First up, to a T-rex skeleton, which has just broken records. It's officially the most expensive fossil to be bought at auction. Selling for a smidge over 50 million US dollars, or about 72 million Aussie dollars. And if you're wondering who bought it, well, that's a mystery. The winning bidder chose to remain anonymous. Gus, as it's been so lovingly nicknamed, is one of the most complete T-rex skeletons in the world, with 183 bones.
CORPSE FLOWER
And now, to a very striking flower with a very striking smell. These are titan arums, also known as corpse flowers.
