To prevent language extinction, Wikitongues invests in language activists, accelerates endangered language revitalization, and defends multilingualism worldwide.
Wikitongues Fellows are saving their languages and keeping their cultures alive. We started the fellowship in 2021 to support the leaders of new language revitalization projects with micro-funding, training, and volunteer support.
Martin Di Maggio is a second generation British speaker of Arbëresh, being the only member of his generation, whom he knows of, born in the diaspora who can speak the language fluently. Arbëresh is an Indo-European, Albanian language with an estimated 100,000 speakers. However, the exact number is unclear: although Arbëresh is a part of the Albanian language family, a majority of Arbëresh live in Italy, where the national census does not collect data on minoritized languages.
