American Violinist Robert Mann was born on this day in 1920
Robert Mann was a founding member and first violinist with the Juilliard String Quartet for 52 years
He came to New York in 1938 to enroll at what was then called the Institute of Musical Art, now Juilliard, where he studied violin with Édouard Dethier, composition with Bernard Wagenaar, and conducting with Edgar Schenkman. Mann won the prestigious Naumburg Competition in 1941 and gave his New York debut in 1941
