Description

John Early sat down with us at Kim's Video in Manhattan to discuss four films to watch in conjunction with his upcoming Drafthouse Recommended MADDIE'S SECRET. Catch screenings of these films at an Alamo near you starting the weekend of June 19th, and be sure to see MADDIE'S SECRET WHEN it opens.

Influenced by a wide, wildly specific spectrum of films–from John Waters channeling Douglas Sirk in POLYESTER, to the glossy moral panic of TV movies like DEATH OF A CHEERLEADER, to the surreal emotional textures of FLASHDANCE and MARNIE–MADDIE’S SECRET is operating in its own highly particular cinematic language. As director John Early puts it, the film is born from “the melodrama-on-a-dime ethos and creepy moralism of American TV movies,” alongside the “careening expressiveness of SHOWGIRLS” and the “quietly devastating CLOCKWATCHERS.” It’s a movie that understands melodrama not as parody, but as emotional architecture: heightened, unstable, and strangely honest.
