In this video I explore a question that has been bothering me for some time:
If AI can produce almost any illustration in seconds, what is the purpose of becoming an illustrator today?
Looking back through art history, illustration was originally about making ideas visible—explaining stories, science, religion and the world around us. Then photography arrived and art turned inward, becoming increasingly about the artist’s personal experience.
Now AI can generate images that would have taken professionals years to learn to create.
So where does that leave the human illustrator?
While drawing Benny the sheep, I wander through ideas about invisible fields, magnetism, quantum theory, observation, and the strange process by which ideas become visible. I may be completely wrong about the physics—but that’s not really the point. The job of an illustrator is to build models that help us think.
Perhaps illustration isn’t about making pictures at all.
Perhaps it’s about making ideas manifest.
